Police of Maia Sandu fabricates cases instead of protecting farmers

The government is using the police as a political weapon against farmers and the opposition
The Democracy at Home Party firmly condemns the attempt by the General Police Inspectorate to turn an unconfirmed incident into a tool of political pressure against Deputy Sergiu Ștefanco and, implicitly, against Moldovan farmers who exercised their constitutional right to protest.
Where is the evidence?
The GPI issued a public statement with serious accusations without presenting any concrete evidence: no conclusive video recording, no medical report for the allegedly injured officer, no fingerprints, no institutional witnesses. Publicly available video recordings do not confirm that the police officer was hit. The officer is healthy and fully active — this is the only indisputable fact of that day.
We ask publicly: why does the GPI issue statements with accusations before completing its investigation? Who does this haste serve?
The context the government hopes you will forget
Moldovan farmers took to the streets for two consecutive days, on June 24 and 25, mobilizing over 250 tractors from 21 districts, blocking national roads and access to several border crossing points. The reason: the 2027 fiscal-budgetary policy promoted by the current government, which raises VAT to 20% and strangles the agricultural sector already in crisis.
Before the protests, the Forța Fermierilor Association publicly reported pressure and intimidation by police against farmers intending to participate — in some areas, officers requested lists of participants and advised farmers to stay home.
Instead of responding to the legitimate demands of the people who feed this country, the government chose to deploy the police and fabricate a media scandal around an opposition deputy present among the citizens he represents.
The party’s position
The Democracy at Home Party supports the right of farmers to protest and the right of its deputies to stand alongside citizens. We will closely monitor the evolution of this case and will counter any attempt at political manipulation through all available legal means.
